David Brady, Professor of Political Science & Leadership Values and Deputy Director, Hoover Institution, Stanford University, will be beginning Grattan's 2010 events program, taking part in a Q & A seminar. His knowledge comes from a breadth of areas including public policy, women's movement and internet voting; making him well equipped to discuss political polarisation, and what Australia can learn from the United States.

Following the seminar he agreed to answer some questions we put to all of our seminar presenters.

What are you optimistic about? I am optimistic about globalisation and that it will continue to lift the bottom billion of the worlds population out of poverty.

What is your biggest worry? My biggest worry is that the advanced democracies have made promises to their people, which they will not be able to deliver.

Is there something you have changed your mind about in the past 5-10 years and why? Whether God exists or not. Have now come to the conclusion T.S Elliot is the greatest poet.

What one book/lecture/film/podcast you’ve read/watched/listened to over the last year would you recommend? Go to a website called econtalk.org by Russel Roberts and there are two podcasts I suggest listening to. They are Michael Spence (Nobel prize winner) and Paul Colyer (author of The Bottom Billion).
