Prestigious US political commentator Thomas E Mann was brought to Australia by the University of Melbourne as a 2009 Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellow and spoke at Grattan Institute’s launch April 2009. Tom’s visit to Australia presented an ideal opportunity to highlight the importance of public policy debate to contemporary society and the role of truly non-aligned think tanks such as Grattan Institute.
The launch was the first of a number of events across Australia during April and May auspiced by Grattan Institute, in which Tom addressed developments in US politics and their implications for Australia.
On Tuesday 21 April, Tom delivered his Miegunyah lecture, titled After the 2008 Election: Politics and Governance in the United States.
Thomas Mann traveled to Adelaide, Perth, ACT, Sydney and Brisbane under the backing of Grattan Institute, The University of Melbourne and the US Embassy, and delivered a number of public lectures and master classes encompassing: Prospects for governance by President Obama and the Democratic Congress, Implications of the new Presidency for the party system, Public involvement in politics, The respective roles of the three branches of government and the power relations between them and The value of evidence-driven, non-aligned think tanks such as the Brookings Institution and Grattan Institute.
