The Hon. Joe Hockey MP, Shadow Treasurer, spoke at Grattan Institute on Thursday 11 March 2010. His speech 'In Defence of Liberty' pursued the theme that as a nation we have not struck the right balance between individual freedoms and collectivism. This will be an influential contribution to a core issue of our times.

Following the seminar he agreed to answer five questions we put to all of our seminar presenters.

What are you optimistic about? The future.

What is your biggest worry? Extremism winning.

If you could do one thing to improve the world what would it be? Stopping the infliction of physical and emotional harm on children.

Is there something you have changed your mind about in the past 5 or 10 years, and why? The power of parenthood – because I became a Dad.
