About Us
Grattan's Mission
Grattan Institute aspires to contribute to public policy in Australia as a liberal democracy in a globalised economy. Our work is objective, evidence-driven and non-aligned. We foster informed public debate on the key issues for Australia through both public events and private forums engaging key decision makers and the broader community.
The current programs of Grattan Institute focus on productivity growth, cities, school education, energy, and water. These programs were selected as important to Australia’s future, where fact-based analysis could assist the debate, and where we believed key issues could benefit from further public debate.
Our Board of Directors
The independence of the Institute is reinforced by its governance. The Institute is an independent body governed by a Board of Directors providing strategic direction to the Institute. These Directors are appointed by a council of members, equally represented, whose advice is sought, but who do not otherwise control the direction or publications of the Institute.

Grattan's History
Grattan Institute was formed in November 2008, responding to the desire for an independent public policy think-tank focused on Australian domestic public policy.
The Board comprises a cross-section of business, academia and government. The research programs are supported by a public policy committee and reference groups involving experts from across the community.
Founding Members
Grattan Institute is grateful for the support of our founding members: the Australian Government, the State Government of Victoria, The University of Melbourne and BHP Billiton. They contributed to an endowment that provides ongoing funds towards Grattan Institute’s programs.
Their support was structured to maintain Grattan Institute’s independence, and is not conditional on Grattan Institute undertaking particular programs or positions. Grattan Institute’s independence is further safeguarded by its experienced and diverse board.
